Close Up Civics Education Program in Newton

Close Up, the nation’s leading non-profit, non-partisan civic education organization, is driven by a mission to inform, inspire, and empower young people to exercise the rights and accept the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. We fulfill our mission through week-long, experiential education programs in and around Washington, DC, and have served over 900,000 middle and high school students and teachers from across the country and around the world.  For over 45 years students, including those from Newton, have been participating in Close Up’s civic education programs have learned the basic tenets of how America’s government works and the importance of being actively engaged in our democracy.  Close Up students return home with the tools and knowledge to make sustained change in their communities.

Bio - Cassi Steenblok was born and raised in Upstate New York where she attended Syracuse University majoring in History and Political Science. After college she moved to Providence, Rhode Island falling in love with New England and her new home. She has worked for non-profit organizations for most of her professional career first as an Americorps member at City Year Rhode Island running a community service and leadership development program for middle school students, then as a community organizer for Clean Water Action protecting the environment and public health. Today she works as the Community Relations Coordinator for the Close Up Foundation, raising money for more low income students in New England to attend a week-long civic engagement and education program in Washington, DC.
