I-Ping Li is raising funds for students who care about community, and for whom a scholarship can make a meaningful impact. "I love that the Newton Rotary Foundation reaches out to parts of the community that need a boost." This scholarship program has supported future engineers, chefs, teachers and many other bright, talented college bound and skilled trade students.
I-Ping is a Newton resident, and husband of Newton Rotary President-Elect,
Gayemarie Brown . "My earliest memories of the Boston Marathon are of me and my elementary school friends, and all our parents joining the countless enthusiastic crowds – handing out water and supporting runners coming up the Newton hills along the final uphill stretches of Commonwealth Avenue, affectionately known as Heartbreak Hill." To this day, his and thousands of other families come out to cheer runners coming through Newton: they like to see the Elites, but always end up staying way longer than planned to cheer on the back-of- the-pack runners – this is where the heart of community fundraising comes to life.
This is I-Ping's first Boston and first marathon! "I would be humbled by the opportunity to cross the finish line successfully of this famed marathon, and to support a wonderful charity and scholarship program in my home town of Newton." And as a father of three, including a junior at Newton North High School, he is thrilled to think he might be able to make a difference to seniors in our community for whom every single opportunity, dollar and leg up matters. There is a perception in our beautiful town that everyone is privileged, but the reality is there is so much unseen need, and it can easily hide in a town that has so much.
Born overseas and growing up in Newton (attended Mason Rice Elementary, Brown Middle, and then South High School) – I-Ping was the beneficiary of a small high school senior scholarship and knows how helpful it was to him going to Carnegie Mellon University.
